AI Challenge Technology Laws

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has experienced a significant rise in 2023, showcasing its alignment with several key technological laws and principles.

Roy Amara’s Law states that we tend to overestimate the short-term effects of technology while underestimating its long-term impacts. This principle is particularly relevant to GenAI, which has shown potential for transformative changes in the future, despite current limitations and challenges.

Gordon Moore’s Law, predicting the exponential growth of computational power, is exemplified in GenAI’s evolution. The expansion of AI models and the parallel advancements in processing hardware like Nvidia’s GPUs and TPUs are direct reflections of this law.

Robert Metcalfe’s Law, emphasizing the value of network growth, highlights the importance of user interactions in enhancing AI systems. However, this also brings to light the risks associated with the lack of diversity in these interactions, potentially leading to biases in AI models.

Hartmut Neven’s Law points to the rapid advancement in quantum computing, suggesting that future quantum computers might greatly surpass the capabilities predicted by Moore’s Law, paving the way for more sophisticated AI.

Lastly, maintaining human identity amidst technological advancements reminds us of the need for careful consideration in policy-making. It’s crucial to ensure that technologies like GenAI are developed in a way that respects and preserves human essence and diversity.

The growth of GenAI in 2023, thus, is not just a technological phenomenon but also a reflection of these broader laws and ethical considerations. As we continue to develop and integrate AI into various aspects of society, understanding and adhering to these principles becomes increasingly important.

And the degree to which we lose sight of that obligation is the degree to which we place everything we have done and are about to do in increased danger. Assigning a corporate ethics and morality czar is not the path to heaven, and is more likely to head in an opposite direction. This responsibility falls to all of us and we need to be mindful every day and call truth to power wherever we see failure.

Especially in cybersecurity.
